Lora Hoffstetter, M.Ed., LPCC, co-owner of Avenues
Lora Hoffstetter has a Masters Degree in Community Counseling from Kent State University. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), an independent license issued for counseling by the state of Ohio. She specializes in individual and family therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Her focus areas are mood and anxiety disorders, self esteem enrichment, anger management, assertiveness training, adolescents who struggle with self mutilation, and individuals and families who need guidance coping with the trauma of divorce. Additionally, she works with couples who desire to enhance their communication and emotional intimacy, as well as those who are seeking alternative parenting strategies for their children and adolescents to enhance parent-child relationships. Lisa Marie Borchert-Hrivnak, M.A.Ed., LPCC, co-owner of Avenues Lisa Marie Borchert-Hrivnak has a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Akron. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), an independent license issued for counseling by the state of Ohio. She has specialized in marital, relationship, family, and adolescent therapy for nine years. Her focus areas include adjustment disorders, adolescents and families in transition, blended family issues, and infidelity. She works with couples who desire to improve their communication with each other as well as couples who are seeking premarital and marital enrichment. Clients may request using spirituality and Christian values in their healing process. Lisa has additional training in divorce mediation, including shared parenting agreements. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location. Tiffany J. Peets, Ph.D, LPCC
Tiffany Peets has a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Akron. She has her Ph.D. in Counseling and Human Service Development from Kent State University, and she is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), an independent license issued for counseling by the state of Ohio. She specializes in helping couples recover from a trauma or crisis (i.e., extramarital affair, job or financial loss), as well as guiding couples who have a desire to enhance their communication and intimacy. She additionally works with adolescents and their families, specifically those who need more effective discipline and parenting strategies as well as parent-child relationship building. Tiffany also assists individuals who struggle with care-taking issues. She has additional training in divorce and general mediation, including shared parenting agreements. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Noha Everetts, M.A.Ed., LPCC
Noha Everetts has a Masters Degree in Education and Human Development with a focus in Community Counseling from George Washington University. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), an independent license issued for counseling by the state of Ohio. She has completed further training at the Cognitive Therapy Institute. She specializes in working with adolescents and adults in mental health counseling including issues of grief and loss, anxiety and mood disorders, marital and family issues, stress management, and women’s issues. Additionally, she works with couples desiring to improve their communication, adults who need guidance balancing the many roles they have, and those who need more effective parenting strategies for their adolescents. She also uses her skills for mediation services, including shared parenting agreements. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Kim Metz, Ph.D, Clinical Psychologist
Kim Metz has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University. She specializes in child and adolescent therapy, with a focus on child behavior disorders and eating disorders. Additional areas of specialization include adult individual therapy, marital and family therapy, and group counseling. Kim also teaches at the college level. Among other things, she educates students about human development, group process, and introductory psychology. She has been involved with both psychotherapy and teaching for the last 10 years and believes that her clinical and teaching experiences are invigorating compliments to each other. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Jeffrey A. Bricker, M.Ed., LPC, LCDC III
Jeffrey A. Bricker has his Masters Degree in Education from Cleveland State University. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC III) issued by the State of Ohio. Jeff specializes in alcoholism, chemical dependency, and addictions counseling. He has extensive experience with this population in both the individual and group setting. Other areas of expertise include crisis intervention, family counseling, clients coping with transitional stressors, anxiety, and severe mood swings. Jeff’s clinical ability consists of pharmacological, behavioral and cognitive treatment of clients coping with diagnoses such as Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Paranoid Personality Disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder (with or without psychotic features). He practices at Avenues’ Medina and Strongsville locations.
Kristine Nickel Gayle , MSSA, LISW
Kristine Nickel Gayle received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University. Kristine specializes in working with individuals, groups, couples, and families. Her focus areas include women and couples struggling with infertility, pregnancy loss, post-partum depression, and other issues unique to women. Kristine is a Professional Member of RESOLVE: The National Fertility Association and has been exploring the emotional issues associated with infertility for over 12 years. Additionally, Kristine has expertise in working with adults and adolescents dealing with the crises of alcoholism and chemical dependency, grief and loss, anxiety and mood disorders, anger management, stress management, and in supporting parents seeking more positive and gentle approaches to parenting.
Stephanie Heck, LMFT, CDCA, AT
Stephanie Heck is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Art Therapist. She received her training at Phillips Graduate Institute in Los Angeles. As an Art Therapist, Stephanie uses traditional talk therapy to supplement a variety of therapeutic techniques. She has worked with both chemical dependency and addiction and has been a CAPT Certified Myers-Briggs Personality typing consultant for 10 years. In addition, Stephanie is an adjunct faculty in the Psychology Department at Ashland University. Areas of clinical interest include couples therapy, divorce support, premarital counseling, men’s issues, adolescents, parenting skills, and co-dependency. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Mary Anne Ricci, M.A., LPCC
Mary Anne Ricci has a Masters Degree in Clinical and Community Psychology from Cleveland State University. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), an independent license issued for counseling by the state of Ohio. She has additional training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and is a member of the International Academy of Eating Disorders. Mary Ann specializes in working with adolescents and adults who have eating disorders and body image concerns. She has extensive experience with this population in both the individual and group setting. Other areas of expertise include couples and family therapy, mood and anxiety disorders, stress management, life adjustment concerns, and women’s issues. She practices at Avenues’ Hudson location.

Jennifer Cherney Jennifer Cherney has a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Bowling Green State University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), an independent license issued for counseling by the state of Ohio. She specializes in individual and group therapy for children, adolescents and adults. Her focus areas include social skill and self-esteem enhancement, stress management, mood and anxiety disorders, anger management, adjustment disorders and substance abuse. Additional areas of specialization include personality disorders and psychotic disorders as well as substance induced mood/psychotic disorders. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Jyl McLaughlin, M.Ed., MCDP
Jyl McLaughlin Jyl McLaughlin has a Masters Degree in Community Counseling from Kent State University. She is a Master Career Development Professional and Certified Professional Résumé Writer with qualification in Myers Briggs assessment. Jyl offers over 10 years of professional career counseling in non profit and university environments. She is experienced in working with vocational assessments as well as individual coaching for job search and planning. She focuses on career coaching for high school seniors, college seniors, young professionals and women returning to the workforce. Jyl has returned to Ohio in summer 2008 after 10 years of living and working the Boston area. She practices with individuals and groups at Avenues in Hudson.
Lee Martin, M.Div., M.Ed., LPCC
Lee Martin has a Masters in Counseling degree from Kent State University and has completed his Ph.D in Counselor Education and Supervision at Kent State University. He Has experience providing a variety of counseling services including outpatient and inpatient hospital settings for adults and youth. He also has experience providing counseling services for couples, individuals, adolescents, and groups. He has provided services addressing issue related marital and pre-marital issues, divorce, depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, and bereavement concerns. As a military veteran and former chaplain with the U.S. Navy, Lee is also available to provide counseling to military personnel and their families concerning pre-deployment and post-deployment adjustment issues. Bible based therapy is also provided to individuals as requested. Lee is currently taking appointments in the Hudson office.
Laura Balliet, MA, LPCC, NCC, ATR-BC, CDCA
Laura Balliet has a Masters Degree in Art Therapy and Counseling from Ursuline College. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Ohio, a nationally Registered and Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC), and a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) in the state of Ohio. Laura may combine traditional counseling techniques with expressive arts interventions to enhance the therapeutic experience. Laura has worked individually and in groups with issues pertinent to the adolescent and adult population including: anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, sexual abuse, self-mutilation, eating disorders, borderline personality, parenting skills, family therapy, communication skills, stress management, substance abuse, and chemical dependency. Laura practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Amy J. Boster, M.Ed., LPCC-S
Amy Boster has a Masters degree in Counseling from Ohio University. She is licensed by the State of Ohio (LPCC-S) to practice independently as well as to supervise counselors working toward the independent counseling license. Ms. Boster has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults in community mental health settings. Her areas of expertise include working with people to manage ADHD, Adult ADD, anxiety and mood disorders including bipolar disorder issues. In addition, Amy has experience and interest in helping people with stress management, adjustment disorders, co-dependency, anger management and assertiveness issues. She has worked with survivors of abuse, domestic violence and problems divorcing families’ experience. She practices in the Medina and Hudson offices.
Shannon Ortiz, M.Ed., PC, MFT
Shannon Ortiz has a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from The University of Akron. She is a Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist licensed by the state of Ohio. She has experience working with adolescents and their families to manage mental health symptoms and conflict with better coping skills and parenting strategies. Areas of clinical interest include couples therapy for opposite and same-sex relationships. She works with couples to increase emotional and physical intimacy through open communication skills. She offers premarital counseling as well as divorce support and parenting skills. She practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Paul Monkowski, Ph.D.
Paul Monkowski received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska. He is a Licensed Psychologist in Ohio and Nebraska, and is listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Dr. Monkowski specializes in adult and adolescent individual and family therapy. He works with individuals, families, and couples dealing with depression, bipolar disorder, stress, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, grief, anger, self-esteem, family issues, parenting, adoption, ADHD, and behavioral management. He also works with couples experiencing marital/ relationship problems. He has particular expertise with men’s issues. He practices at Avenue’s Medina location.
Kelly Clapper M.A., LPCC-S
Kelly Clapper has a Masters degree in Community Counseling from John Carroll University and is currently completing a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology at Walden University. She is licensed by the State of Ohio (LPCC-S) to practice independently as well as to supervise counselors working toward the independent counseling license. She has 10 years of experience in working with children, adolescents and adults in community mental health settings in individual, family, and group counseling. Her areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, social phobia, ADHD, relationships, anger management, social skills, self-esteem, bipolar disorder, trauma, sexual abuse, self-mutilation, eating disorders, parenting skills, family therapy, communication skills, and stress management. She also has an interest in working with mothers that are dealing with issues related to depression and anxiety, along with co-dependency issues. In addition, she has a great working relationship with the local Medina County city schools in order to assist in the facilitation of Multi-factored evaluations and Individualized Education Plans. William Maxon-Kann, M.A.Ed., PCC
William Maxon-Kann has a Masters Degree in Community Counseling from Malone College, and he is currently working toward earning his doctorate degree in counselor education and supervision from Kent State University. He is an independently licensed Supervising Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC-S) in the state of Ohio. He has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples who have suffered from difficulties related to mood disorders, anxiety, psychotic disorders, relationships, anger management, social skills, self-esteem, purpose and meaning in life, sexuality, gender confusion/questioning, identity development, substance use, addictions, transitions in life, and more severe and persistent mental illness. His primary areas of clinical interest include substance use, addictions, gender, sexuality, and men’s issues. He practices at Avenues’ Medina location.
Roger Buese, M.A., M.Div., LPCC-S
Roger Buese has his Masters Degrees in Divinity and Psychology from Vanderbilt University and is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisory Endorsement. He has over forty years of experience in counseling services and continues to teach psychology at Baldwin-Wallace College where he has been an adjunct faculty member for twenty years. Previously he was the Director of the Residential Treatment Center of the Berea Children’s Home and Family Services where he developed and directed three daycare centers, outpatient counseling services, and community parenting and educational programs. He specializes in working with children and adolescents in the areas of severe behavioral concerns, anger management, parenting, and blended family issues. He has also worked in two state prisons. Mr. Buese is also an ordained minister having served several area churches. He is a noted public speaker having presented at local, state, regional, and national conferences. He was selected by Cleveland Magazine as one of their most interesting people. Appointments can be made with Mr. Buese at the Medina location.
Monica S. Padula, PhD, LISW, LIMFT
Dr. Monica Padula is a psychotherapist who holds a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is licensed in the State of Ohio as an Independent Clinical Social Worker, Independent Marriage and Family Therapist, and Approved Clinical Social Work Supervisor. She is certified as a Divorce and Conflict Mediator and Clinical Hypnotherapist. She has a passion for helping people transform the pain, confusion and loss in their lives to wholeness and healing through compassion. Her greatest joy is assisting clients to recognize their problems and issues as stepping stones of necessary change in order to achieve greater personal growth.
Dr. Padula treats individuals, couples and families using solution focused therapy in many specialty areas including: couples in crisis, blended family and remarriage issues, divorce recovery, grief/loss, military family readjustments, sexual abuse and trauma, eating disorders, and anger management.
She also specializes in treating addictions such as internet, gambling, food and shopping. Weight loss, fitness and holistic health counseling are additional areas of interest. Her expertise in Clinical Hypnosis has successfully helped clients manage chronic pain, chronic illnesses, phobias and stress. Further areas of expertise with children and adolescents include ADD/ADHD testing and treatment, coping with the school bully, and severe behavioral concerns. Heidi Larew, NCC, PCC-S, LICDC, ATR-BC
Heidi Larew is a licensed professional clinical counselor, licensed independent chemical dependency counselor, and art therapist. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Kent State University. Heidi has a Masters Degree in Clinical Pastoral Counseling from Ashland University and a Masters Degree in Art Therapy from Ursuline College. She uses a variety of therapeutic approaches depending on each person’s specific needs. These approaches include client centered therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and art therapy. Her clinical emphasis is on teaching skills for emotional stability, providing a listening ear for validation, and emphasizing hope. Heidi is a member of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and participates in committees for the American Art Therapy and the Buckeye Art Therapy Associations. Heidi provides clinical supervision to postgraduate mental health professionals. She practices at Avenues’ Hudson location.
Judith Zaher, PCC, LSW
Jude Zahar has a master’s degree in Community Counseling from Akron University and an independent license as a clinical counselor. She is dually licensed as a social worker in the state of Ohio. Jude has extensive experience working with anger management and domestic violence issues. Other areas of expertise are depression, anxiety, eating disorders, parenting issues, managing bipolar disorder, and addiction issues. She works with children, adolescents, adults and families.
