June Phelps, PhD, Clinical Psychologist
I am a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience treating adults and adolescents who struggle with a wide range of mental health concerns. My Ph.D is in clinical psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. Although I treat many psychological conditions, my specialization is helping people with anxiety disorders. Prior to working at Avenues of Counseling and Mediation, I was the clinical director at the Anxiety Institute in Greenwich, Connecticut. My areas of expertise include treating: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Scrupulosity (a form of OCD that focuses on faith), Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Body-Focused Repetitive Disorders (e.g., Trichotillomania - hair pulling, Excoriation - skin picking), Specific Phobias (e.g., Emetophobia - the fear of vomiting), Health Anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I use evidence-based approaches such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT - for an explanation of how ACT Works, click here), in combination with Compassion-Focused Therapy to address most anxiety-related conditions. If a traumatic memory is associated with your symptoms, I often include a memory reconsolidation component in your treatment plan (e.g., EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing; Imagery Rescripting). For Body-Focused Repetitive Disorders, I typically approach the problem using Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT) or Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment for Skin Picking and Hair Pulling (ComB).
I am certified in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder from the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation - Behavior Therapy Training Institute. I am an EMDR Trained therapist. I am also trained in Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT) and Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment for Skin Picking and Hair Pulling (ComB).
In addition to specializing in the above-listed conditions, I am interested in treating those who suffer from Prolonged Grief Disorder, sometimes referred to as Complicated Grief. I am trained through the Prolonged Grief Center at Columbia University. Finally, I am experienced and interested in treating individuals undergoing life transitions, particularly college students and older adults. I enjoy working with LGBTQ+ individuals and their family members. My primary goal as a psychologist is to help people to develop self-acceptance while facing their problems head-on, acting in ways that are consistent with their values. After engaging in therapy, you will be able to respond more flexibly when facing stress and will report a more vibrant and fulfilling life. Look forward to working on your goals together.
