Nash Monroe, MA, LPC
My name is Nash Monroe and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Ohio. (LPC). I have a Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Akron, and I am a member of the Ohio Counseling Association. My approach to therapy entails a combination of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma focused CBT, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This means we focus on changing negative thoughts and behaviors, accepting and releasing feelings surrounding choices and circumstances, coming to terms with what is in and out of our control, and identifying emotions and needs to help improve our interpersonal communication and relationships.
My approach to counseling is rooted in mindfulness and present moment awareness. I believe that before we can communicate our wants and needs assertively, we must acknowledge those wants and needs through the practice of self exploration and discovery. I am passionate about existentialism, and I enjoy identifying what is meaningful to each individual I work with. I am passionate about guiding others towards their self-realized life purpose(s) and dreams, based on their lived experience(s) and values. I believe that everyone is capable of building a life worth living if supported and given the right tools.
I also enjoy utilizing a systems approach in my counseling practice. This means we look at the various systems we are part of: family systems, social/cultural systems, economic systems, digital systems, and political systems, in order to gain a better understanding of how they might be influencing our thought processes/behaviors. I am also a firm believer that each individual is composed of parts. This means that you are not your anger, or your shame, or your anxiety. You are you! You are wonderfully you! And our emotions function to serve and protect us, even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes. Working with these parts and offering compassion to them helps us to create space to experience unpleasant feelings, without wholly identifying with them.
I work with people facing a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, life adjustment issues, suicide prevention, trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, spiritual/religious displacement, and obsessive/compulsive behaviors. I have experience working with adolescents (11+), individuals and families. I feel honored when serving as a space holder for clients. I hold great reverence for those willing to share about the great pains and great joys of life with me. When not in the therapy office, I share a fulfilling life with my partner, Norwegian forest cat (Willow), and extended collection of family/friends. I practice wellness by spending time in nature, running and playing basketball, practicing yoga, meditation, and balanced eating. I enjoy cooking, reading, art, spirituality, horticulture, and anthropology. When I have moments to spare, I attend live music and festivals; and I have been to 23 of the 50 states. Working my way to 50, one state at a time.
