Ride the Wave
A DBT Summer Crash Course
Introduction to DBT Skills
This 3-part monthly workshop is a 2.5 hour DBT-Informed workshop for college-aged adults with elements of expressive arts, sandtray techniques and EMDR therapies.
What Is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic approach that combines principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with mindfulness and acceptance strategies.
Key components of DBT include:
Dialectics: DBT emphasizes the integration of seemingly contradictory concepts, encouraging individuals to accept themselves while also acknowledging the need for change. It promotes finding a balance between acceptance and change.
Mindfulness: Mindfulness skills are a core component of DBT. Individuals are taught to be fully present in the moment, observe and describe their experiences without judgment, and participate in activities with full attention.
Distress Tolerance: DBT teaches skills to cope with crises and distressing situations without resorting to destructive behaviors. These skills include distraction techniques, self-soothing activities, and strategies for accepting and tolerating distress.
Emotion Regulation: Individuals learn to identify and manage intense and fluctuating emotions. The focus is on understanding the function of emotions, recognizing emotional triggers, and developing healthier ways to regulate and express emotions.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: This component helps individuals improve their communication and relationship skills. It focuses on assertiveness, setting boundaries, and balancing the needs of the individual with the needs of others.
