Medicare Counseling & Therapy for Older Adults
Finding a counselor who accepts Medicare shouldn't make getting mental health support more difficult.
Avenues of Counseling and Mediation has Medicare-approved counselors who provide therapy for older adults experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, relationship concerns, caregiver stress, health-related changes, and other mental health needs.
We provide Medicare-covered counseling at our Akron and Medina, Ohio offices, with telehealth counseling also available when appropriate.
Does Medicare Cover Mental Health Counseling?
Yes. Medicare Part B provides coverage for many outpatient mental health services, including individual and group psychotherapy provided by eligible Medicare-enrolled mental health professionals.
Covered providers can include clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors, among other qualified professionals.
Your individual coverage and out-of-pocket costs can vary depending on your Medicare coverage, other insurance, provider, and services received.
Our intake team can help determine whether one of our Medicare-approved counselors may be a good fit for your needs.
Mental Health Support for Older Adults
Emotional well-being remains important throughout every stage of life. Older adulthood can bring meaningful opportunities and experiences, but it can also bring changes that affect mental health.
Our counselors work with older adults experiencing concerns such as:
Anxiety and excessive worry
Depression
Grief and loss
Retirement and adjusting to a new stage of life
Changes in relationships or family roles
Loneliness and social isolation
Caregiver stress and burnout
Stress related to health changes
Chronic illness and adjusting to physical limitations
Loss of independence
Sleep concerns
Family conflict
Major life transitions
Stress related to caring for a spouse or loved one
Counseling provides a confidential place to talk through these experiences, develop healthy coping strategies, and receive support during periods of change.
Counseling for Retirement & Life Transitions
Retirement is often portrayed as a time of relaxation and freedom, but leaving the workforce can also create significant changes in routine, relationships, identity, finances, and sense of purpose.
Other transitions may happen at the same time, including becoming a caregiver, losing loved ones, moving, becoming an empty nester, experiencing changes in health, or adjusting to new family roles.
Therapy can provide support while navigating these transitions and help you identify meaningful ways to approach this stage of life.
Grief, Loss & Changing Relationships
Grief can become an increasingly common part of life as we age. The death of a spouse, family member, friend, or pet can be deeply difficult, but grief isn't limited to death.
Retirement, health changes, moving from a longtime home, changing relationships, or losing aspects of independence can also involve feelings of grief and adjustment.
Counseling provides a place to process loss at your own pace while developing ways to cope with the changes it brings.
Anxiety & Depression in Older Adults
Anxiety and depression can affect people at any age. Changes in health, relationships, independence, finances, caregiving responsibilities, or social connections can sometimes contribute to emotional distress later in life.
Mental health concerns should not simply be dismissed as a normal part of aging
Counseling can help identify patterns contributing to anxiety or depression and provide strategies for managing emotions, stress, thoughts, relationships, and everyday challenges.
Caregiver Stress & Burnout
Caring for a spouse, partner, parent, or other loved one can be meaningful, but caregiving can also be physically and emotionally demanding.
Caregivers may find themselves putting their own needs aside while managing appointments, health concerns, household responsibilities, changing family roles, and uncertainty about the future.
Counseling can provide caregivers with a place to focus on their own emotional well-being, establish healthy boundaries, manage stress, and navigate the complicated emotions that can accompany caregiving.
How Does Medicare Part B Cover Therapy?
Medicare Part B covers many outpatient mental health services, including psychotherapy provided by eligible Medicare-enrolled mental health professionals.
With Original Medicare, the Part B deductible generally applies. After the deductible is met, beneficiaries typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered outpatient mental health services. Costs may differ depending on your individual coverage, additional insurance, and other circumstances.
Medicare Advantage plans may have different provider networks and cost-sharing requirements.
Because coverage varies, we recommend verifying your individual benefits before beginning treatment.

Medicare Telehealth Counseling
Telehealth can make counseling more accessible for individuals who have difficulty traveling to an office or simply prefer meeting with a therapist remotely.
Medicare covers certain behavioral health services provided through telehealth when Medicare requirements are met.
Avenues offers virtual counseling options for clients throughout Ohio. Our intake team can help determine whether telehealth is available and appropriate based on your insurance coverage, therapist, and individual circumstances.
